There Will Be Blood

The intersecting life stories of Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday in early twentieth century California presents miner-turned-oilman Daniel Plainview, ...a driven man who will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. He works hard but also takes advantage of those around him at their expense if need be. His business partner/son (H.W.) is, in reality, an "acquired" child whose true biological single-parent father (working on one of Daniel's rigs) died in a workplace accident. Daniel is deeply protective of H.W. if only for what H.W. brings to the partnership. Eli Sunday is one in a pair of twins whose family farm Daniel purchases for the major oil deposit located on it. Eli, a local preacher and a self-proclaimed faith healer, wants the money from the sale of the property to finance his own church. The lives of the two competitive men often clash as Daniel pumps oil off the property and tries to acquire all the surrounding land at bargain prices to be able to build a pipeline to the coast, and as Eli tries to build his own religious empire. Show More

Details

In early twentieth century California, the lives of Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday intertwine, creating a gripping tale. Daniel, a former miner turned oilman, is a determined individual who stops at nothing to achieve his ambitions. He works tirelessly, often exploiting those around him for personal gain. His partner, H.W., is actually not his biological son but an orphan whose father perished while working on one of Daniel's drilling sites. Despite this, Daniel remains fiercely protective of H.W., recognizing the value he brings to their business partnership.

On the other hand, Eli Sunday is a local preacher and self-proclaimed faith healer. His family farm, which is home to a significant oil deposit, is purchased by Daniel. Eli, eager to finance his own church, seeks to capitalize on the sale of the property. The clash between these two ambitious men becomes inevitable as Daniel frantically extracts oil from the land while simultaneously scheming to acquire surrounding properties at discounted prices, with the ultimate goal of constructing a pipeline to the coast. Meanwhile, Eli endeavors to build his own religious empire.

There Will Be Blood is a gripping and tense drama that pits the relentless ambition of these two men against each other, showcasing the ruthlessness and determination required to succeed in an era driven by industry and faith.
